Whimsically Formal
So it seems the “whimsically formal” attire suggestion and accompanying direction provided on our invitations raised more questions than it answered...
Our bad!
Before getting "whimsically" sidetracked, let us start with the basics--

Formal - Evening
Ladies:
Depending on local customs, long evening dress or dressy cocktail dress; gloves optional.
Gentlemen:
Dark suit or Tuxedo (tuxedo optional, unless invitation states "Black Tie").
We did not intend to overwhelm anyone with the word "whimsically", and perhaps we should have phrased it "formal with a touch of whimsy" instead!** If in doubt, classic formal attire is completely appropriate. If you do not feel like schlepping a tuxedo across the pond, that is ok too, as black tie is totally optional!
**There was significant debate in advance of printing between "whimsically formal" and "formal with a touch of whimsy".
